Introduction - Prospective Teachers

When you accept a teaching position with one of the Northwest Territories (NWT) Divisional Education Councils (DECs) or Yellowknife School Boards, you become a member of the Northwest Territories Teachers' Association (NWTTA).

The NWTTA is the bargaining agent for all teachers in the NWT and it interprets the collective agreements for its members. Currently, there are approximately 800 NWTTA members.

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) employs approximately 500 teachers through its six GNWT Divisional Education Councils (DECs) and there are two School Boards in Yellowknife who also employ teachers. Yellowknife Catholic Schools (YCS), a public denominational school board, employs over 100 teachers; Yellowknife District Education No. 1 (YK1), a public school board, employs approximately 214 teachers and educational assistants.

Information provided on the NWTTA website represents a small portion
of the details you may require before making your final decision
on whether or not to accept a teaching position.
