Northwest Territories - Divisional Education Councils and School Boards

There are eight education jurisdictions within the Northwest Territories. Each region is represented by either a Divisional Education Council (DEC) or School Board. The superintendent is the representative of the employer in each DEC or School Board.

Beaufort-Delta Region

Members of the NWTTA’s Beaufort-Delta Region include approximately 152 teachers and administrators employed by the Government of the Northwest Territories. Beaufort Delta Divisional Education Council (BDDEC) schools are located in the communities of in Aklavik, Fort MacPherson, Inuvik, Holman Island, Paulatuk, Sachs Harbour, Tsiigehtchic, and Tuktoyaktuk, NT.

Dehcho Region

Members of the NWTTA’s Dehcho Region include approximately 64 teachers and administrators employed by the Government of the Northwest Territories. Dehcho Divisional Education Council (DDEC) schools are located in Fort Liard, Fort Providence, Fort Simpson, Jean Marie River, Kakisa, Nahanni Butte, Trout Lake, and Wrigley, NT.

Fort Smith Region

Members of the NWTTA’s Fort Smith Region of include approximately 55 teachers and administrators employed by the Government of the Northwest Territories. South Slave Divisional Education Council (SSDEC) governs education in both NWTTA Regions of Fort Smith and South Slave. SSDEC schools located in the NWTTA Fort Smith Region include the two schools located in Fort Smith, NT.

Sahtu Region

Members of the NWTTA’s Sahtu Region include approximately 64 teachers employed by the Government of the Northwest Territories. Sahtu Divisional Education Council (SDEC) schools are located in Colville Lake, Deline, Fort Good Hope, Norman Wells, and Tulita, NT.

South Slave Region

Members of the NWTTA’s South Slave Region include approximately 94 teachers and administrators employed by the Government of the Northwest Territories. South Slave Divisional Education Council (SSDEC) governs education in both NWTTA Regions of South Slave and Fort Smith. SSDEC schools located in the NWTTA South Slave Region include Fort Resolution, Hay River, K'atlodeeche First Nations and Lutselk'e, NT.

Tlicho Region

Members of the NWTTA’s Tlicho Region of NWTTA include approximately 75 teachers and administrators employed by the Government of the Northwest Territories. These Tlicho Community Services Agency (TCSA) schools are located in Behchoko, Rae Lakes, Wekweti, Wha Ti, and Yellowknife, NT.

Yellowknife Education District No. 1 Region

Members in the NWTTA Yellowknife Education District No. 1 Region include approximately 167 teachers and administrators as well as 48 educational assistants employed by Yellowknife Education District No. 1 (YK1), a public school board. YK1 schools are located in Yellowknife, Ndilo and Dettah, NT.

Yellowknife Catholic Schools Region

Members in the NWTTA Yellowknife Catholic Schools Region include approximately 109 teachers and administrators employed by Yellowknife Catholic Schools (YCS), a public denominational school board. YCS schools are located in Yellowknife, NT.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Commission Scolaire Francophone (CSF) Divisional Education Council (DEC) CSF is NOT recognized by the NWTTA as one of its regions. NWTTA members working in CSF schools are represented by either the NWTTA Tlicho or South Slave Regions, depending upon which school they teach in. This GNWT DEC provides French Language education to francophone students. NWTTA members who work in this jurisdiction are hired by the Government of the Northwest Territories
