Professional Development

Professional Development is the continuous growth of personal and professional knowledge and expertise that enhances teaching in support of student learning. It engages individuals and groups in a broad range of activities, including teacher preparation, in-service, individual, staff and organizational development. It has a collective as well as an individual focus. The primary focus of professional development should be to enhance teaching and support student learning. Over the next few months, this section will be developed further. Suggestions and comments are welcomed.

(A joint endeavor by the Canadian Teachers’ Federation and its Members to give professional assistance to teachers in developing countries.)

Application Form (PDF format)

Please note that the application is divided into two sections. A copy of Section A, containing information of a general nature and related to academic background and professional experience, will be sent to the host organization overseas. We strongly recommend that at least this part of the application be typewritten or printed very clearly.

Section B asks for information of a more personal nature and access to it will be restricted to the National Selection Committee, your Team Leader, and to the staff of CTF’s International Programs.

The application form is to be completed and returned to your provincial or territorial teachers’ organization not later than October 31. Please see list of sponsoring organizations on the next page and be sure to call or log into your organization’s web site for additional application information.

Please read the following before applying:

  1. All applicants must:
    • be a member of a provincial or territorial teacher organization which is a Member of CTF
    • hold an appropriate teachers’ certificate
    • have at least five years teaching experience in Canada
    • be a Canadian citizen
    • be in excellent health
    • show evidence of flexibility and mature judgment
    • hold a Canadian passport valid until at least December of the year you will travel

  2. The travel and living expenses of participants are covered by contributions from CTF Members (provincial or territorial teacher organizations), by a grant from the Canadian International Development Agency, and from budgetary allocations of the Canadian Teachers’ Federation.

  3. Travel to the host country will be arranged by CTF in accordance with the Travel Guidelines established by the Trustees of the CTF Trust Fund. These guidelines state: “THAT efforts be made to apply the lowest possible airfares for travel associated with Project Overseas that are consistent with the objectives of the program.” Consequently, CTF will arrange travel by the most direct and most economical route and will purchase, whenever possible, excursion air tickets with the limitations that apply to such tickets.

  4. The commitment to Project Overseas is great both in and out of the classrooms.

  5. Because of the nature of the Project, participants are not allowed to be accompanied by friends or family during the Orientation program or during the active program overseas.

  6. Participants must be aware that a project may be cancelled at the last minute due to unforeseen circumstances. CTF cannot guarantee placement on another team.

  7. It is most often necessary to share living accommodation with another Project Overseas participant.

  8. Participants are not permitted to drive a motorized vehicle during their stay abroad. The teachers’ organization overseas is usually responsible for providing transportation in connection with the Project. Other necessary transportation will be arranged by the Team Leader.

  9. It is understood that all participants will return to Canada at the end of their assignment because of the considerable benefit to their Canadian colleagues and their teacher organization from consultation, discussion, and talk during the balance of the year.

  10. Project Overseas (PO) operates in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and, occasionally, elsewhere. Participants must be prepared to be assigned to any location where there is a CTF Project.

  11. Most Project Overseas assignments are 4-6 weeks long. CTF does not usually know program dates until February each year, after teams are formed, and it is important to note that some projects do span most of the summer (July & August) and dates are subject to change. Applicants must, therefore, be flexible and available for the entire summer.
